The conductor stands on the podium and raises the baton, then suddenly – with a gesture the music begins! The flutes flutter sweetly, the violins trill and the trumpets blast their bright notes.

Meet the Orchestra concerts are a wonderful way to introduce orchestral music to families and children.

This interactive performance includes snippets of core orchestral repertoire and is an opportunity to learn more about the different instrumental families. You can even have a go at conducting the orchestra yourself.

Performed by the SYO’s Peter Seymour Orchestra, this relaxed and informal concert has been specially designed to be interactive, informative and most importantly, lots of fun!

On stage with the Sydney Youth Orchestras will be young local musicians who have been selected to work with the SYO for this special performance at The Pavilion. Repertoire will include highlights from Jean Sibelius, Dimitri Shostakovich, Gustav Holst and Christopher Tin.

Children are encouraged to join in. Stomp your feet to the timpani drumbeat, clap your hands to the big, brass tubas, dance gently to the delicate flutes and wiggle along to the clarinet.

Workshop
Up to 40 young local musicians have the opportunity to be part of the concert! If you are chosen you will attend a 3-hour workshop in the morning and perform in that afternoon’s concert on stage at The Pavilion.

Complete your details on this form which will be shared with and assessed by the Sydney Youth Orchestras team. If you are successful you will be sent music parts to practice before the big day.

Cost to workshop participants is $40. Age range 8 – 18 years.

Repertoire:

  • Jean Sibelius – Finlandia
  • Gustav Holst – Themes from the Planets
  • Christopher Tin – Baba Yetu
  • Dimitri Shostakovich – Waltz No. 2

Workshop musicians will need to be approximately AMEB 4th grade or equivalent
