ABOUT SONIDO
From the haunting sounds of the Andes to the rich rhythms and melodies of Cuba, Mexico and Venezuela, to pop, rock and jazz sounds, SONIDO’s music is a journey around Latin America and beyond.
Featuring more than 40 wind, string and percussion instruments, SONIDO’s compositions and performances having been wowing audiences for nearly 45 years.
Influenced by the culture of their home in Sydney and their Latin American heritage, SONIDO’s sound is a unique form of musical expression born of an immigrant experience.
Don’t miss Marco Carvajal, Claudio Hevia, Marco Lopez, Cesar Marin, Stephen Aguilera-Mendoza, Lautaro Veloso and Ricardo Cancino when they perform for Sutherland Music Club!
Between 2020 and 2022 SONIDO wrote and recorded their first album of original music since the mid-1990s, called ‘global’
“If you’ve ever been to a SONIDO performance, you will know how deep the traditions of Latin musical culture run…. The musicianship is of a supremely high standard.… sublime intonation of the vocal harmonies, the phenomenal interwoven pocket rhythms played on the zampoñas and quenas (panpipe and flute) and the synchronisation of complex yet flowing danceable grooves played on guitars/strings of all kinds, charango, cuatro and percussion of bombo, cajon, congas and more.”
Excerpts from a review of ‘global’ by Cameron Undy (Music Artist/Curator)
We acknowledge the Dharawal people as the Traditional Custodians of the land within the Sutherland Shire. We value and celebrate Dharawal culture and language, and acknowledge Dharawal people’s continuing connection to the land, sea and community. We pay respect to the Elders and their families, past, present and emerging, and through them, to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
